Across Open Science Week 2026: making research more open, accessible and collaborative

19–23 October 2026 | Online sessions and a closing event in Udine
09.
October 2026

How can we make research more accessible and reusable? What does responsible research assessment look like? And how is artificial intelligence changing the way we produce and communicate scientific knowledge?

Across Open Science Week 2026 will bring together international speakers and partner universities to explore these questions through a programme of talks, seminars and exchanges. Led by the University of Udine, the event will highlight practical approaches to Open Science and the challenges facing researchers and science communicators.

Exploring Open Science in practice

Open Science extends beyond access to scientific publications. It also encompasses research data, software, educational resources and review processes, alongside opportunities for citizens to participate in research.

For Across, these practices support knowledge sharing across borders, collaboration between universities and stronger connections between research and society.

The week’s programme will explore several dimensions of this shared commitment:

  • Monday, 19 October: opening of Across Open Science Week, followed by a plenary lecture by Giulia Malaguarnera from OpenAIRE on the importance of Open Science in European research funding.
  • Tuesday, 20 October: research data infrastructure and tools supporting scholarly communication, hosted by Białystok University of Technology, followed by a session on responsible research assessment from Chemnitz University of Technology.
  • Wednesday, 21 October: a seminar on Diamond Open Access and the WISENT project in Germany, hosted by Chemnitz University of Technology.
  • Thursday, 22 October: sessions on citizen science and reproducibility through an origami workshop retrospective, research integrity in the age of AI, and data papers discussed with doctoral candidates. These contributions are hosted by the Université de Perpignan Via Domitia and the University of Craiova.

Celebrating research and its communication

On Friday, 23 October, the University of Udine will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its HR Excellence in Research recognition, with the participation of the University of Girona’s Vice-Rector for Internationalisation.

The event will also feature the “Communicating Research” Award, recognising three young researchers for their ability to share their work with a wider audience. Awards will cover three research areas: Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Engineering, and Social Sciences and Humanities.
