Across Alliance Engages in High-Level Discussions on the Future of European Universities

On February 26–27, 2025, representatives from European University Alliances gathered in Brussels for the High-Level Meeting on the European Universities Initiative, hosted by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture. The event provided a crucial platform for discussions on strengthening European higher education, fostering innovation, and enhancing cross-border collaboration.

Ahead of this high-level meeting, representatives, including those from the Across Alliance, participated in the FOREU4ALL General Forum—a Community of Practice for European Universities. This session focused on key topics such as governance, funding, branding, and deeper collaboration within alliances, laying the groundwork for the policy discussions that followed.

 

Key Highlights from the Meetings

  • FOREU4ALL General Forum (Feb 26, morning): Representatives exchanged insights on strategic governance, funding opportunities, and the role of alliances in shaping EU policies, ensuring a holistic approach to education, research, and societal impact.

 

  • Closed Meeting with Rectors (Feb 26, afternoon): Professor Cezar Ionuț Spînu, Rector of the University of Craiova and representative of the Across Rectors’ Council, participated in a discussion with European Commission Executive Vice-President Roxana Mînzatu. The session highlighted how European Universities Alliances can drive transformation, enhance future-proof skills, and contribute to Europe’s strategic autonomy.

 

  • Conference on “Shaping the Future” (Feb 27): The role of European Universities Alliances in strengthening innovation ecosystems and regional competitiveness was at the center of discussions. Experts from universities, the European Parliament, and regional authorities shared insights on the impact of alliances across education, research, and innovation.

 

  • Networking & Strategic Collaboration: Engaging with policymakers, industry leaders, and academic stakeholders, Across reinforced its commitment to ensuring that the European University Initiative benefits students, staff, and communities across borders.
