Across Newsletter No. 3 Is Now Available
The third issue of the Across Newsletter, published in September 2026, is now available online.
This new edition brings together the latest developments, events and achievements from across the Across European University Alliance, showcasing the growing cooperation between partner universities, their communities and regional stakeholders.
Strengthening European cooperation across borders
In his opening message, Josep Calbó Angrill, Rector of the University of Girona, reflects on the origins and ambitions of Across and highlights the importance of cooperation between universities located in European border regions.
The newsletter illustrates this vision through a wide range of initiatives involving students, researchers, academic and administrative staff, and regional partners.
Among the highlights, Across was present at community events in Chemnitz, including the TUC Summer Night and Christopher Street Day, while the International Staff Week at Białystok University of Technology brought together participants from across Europe to exchange practices and explore new opportunities for mobility and internationalisation.
Giving students a stronger voice
Student participation also takes centre stage in this issue.
University of Girona student David Cebotari represented Across at the European Students’ Union conference in Malta, while Numidia Chami took part in the European Student Assembly at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, contributing to discussions on democracy, civic participation and the future of Europe.
The newsletter also highlights initiatives promoting inclusion, gender equality and diversity, including the Across Generations webinar organised by the University of Udine and the For Women in STEM: Make Yourself a Role Model campaign.
New opportunities for education and mobility
The launch of Across eCampus Beta marks another important milestone. The new digital platform provides students and staff with access to learning, mobility and collaboration opportunities, including the Teacher Training Academy, Atomic Learning Units and a Mobility Guide.
The newsletter also showcases Erasmus+ staff mobility activities and international training initiatives, demonstrating how exchanges between partner universities contribute to knowledge sharing and the development of new professional connections.
Research and innovation beyond borders
Research and innovation feature prominently throughout the September issue.
From INNOBUILD 2026 in Białystok to the PAMS 2026 conference in Perpignan, Across partners are developing scientific collaborations across disciplines and borders. The newsletter also presents research visits, open science initiatives and new collaborations involving universities from France, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and beyond.
One of the featured stories focuses on the doctoral research of Anaïs Gomez, supported through France 2030 funding at the University of Perpignan Via Domitia and co-supervised with the University of Girona. Her research on Catalan cannon merchants during the interwar period illustrates how cross-border cooperation can open access to archives, expertise and academic perspectives on both sides of the French-Spanish border.
Looking ahead: the Across Water Hackathon
The newsletter also looks towards the next major opportunities for the Across community.
From 20 to 22 November 2026, the Across Water Hackathon will bring together students, researchers, entrepreneurs, professionals and citizens at UPVD IN CUBE in Perpignan. Over 53 hours, participants will work in multidisciplinary teams on real-life challenges related to water management, climate resilience, agriculture, urban uses, water quality and marine and coastal ecosystems.
