Accommodation

Most participants booked rooms in one of these four hotels. For directions, select your hotel. The Hotel an der Oper, the Biendo Hotel and the Super8 Hotel are no more than a 10min walk away from Chemnitz Main Station. The Seaside Hotel (located directly between the two campuses) is just a 10min tram ride away.

Public Transport

The tram lines 3, C13, C14, C15 connect the two university campuses and Chemnitz Main Stations as well as the city centre. Below you will find some itineraries that will be helpful for your stay in Chemnitz.

Connection to Hotels from Chemnitz Main Station

Seaside Residence Hotel

Arriving at Chemnitz Main Station you can get on one of the following tram lines: C13 (direction “Aue”), C14 (direction “Thalheim”), C15 or 3 (direction “Technopark”).  At the tram stop “Bernsbachplatz” (approx. 10 min tram ride) you will be right at the hotel.

Hotel an der Oper | Biendo Hotel | Super 8 Hotel | Congress Hotel

Arriving at Chemnitz Main Station, you can choose to either walk to the hotels or to get on one of the following trams: 3 or C15 (direction “Technopark”), 4 (direction “Hutholz”), C14 (direction “Thalheim”), C13 (direction “Aue”) or C11 (direction “Stollberg (Sachs)”.

Hotel an der Oper is directly located at the tram stop “Theaterplatz” (approx. 5min tram ride) or if you decide to walk it takes approx. 8 min.

The Biendo Hotel, the Super8 Hotel and the Congress Hotel are located close to the tram station “Roter Turm”. The first hotel is right in front of the tram station, the Super8 Hotel and the Congress Hotel can be reached by an approx. 5min (Super8 Hotel) or respectively approx. 8min walk (Congress Hotel) from the station “Roter Turm”.

Connection to the Campuses

On Wednesday and Thursday, you will need to take a tram to reach the Campus Reichenhainer Straße. From each hotel (tram station “Roter Turm” or tram station “Bernsbachplatz”) you can take the tram lines 3 (direction “Technopark”), C13 (direction “Aue”), C14 (direction “Thalheim”), C15 (direction “Technopark”) to easily get to the campus. At the tram stations “TU Campus” or “Rosenbergstraße” you have to get off.

During Wednesday we are going to change the campus. The lunch break and afternoon sessions take place on Campus Straße der Nationen. To reach the campus Straße der Nationen, you will need to take the tram lines 3 (direction “Hauptbahnhof”), C13 (direction “Burgstädt”), C14 (direction “Mittweida”). Please get off at the tram stations “Omnibusbahnhof” or “Theaterplatz” to get to the campus Straße der Nationen.

Connection to the “Weltecho Chemnitz” on Thursday

The best connection to the last event of our Kick-Off Meeting is a walk from the “Zentralhaltestelle”. It will take approx. 10 min. People who stay at the Seaside Residence Hotel can either take each tram going from “Bernsbachplatz” to the “Zentralhaltestelle” or can walk from the hotel to the Weltecho (approx. 10 min walk).

Find your own Itinerary

If you want to have a look for yourself, how you can easily reach each site, you can use the journey planner of VMS (Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen; in English: Central Saxony Transport Group). Google Maps generally also provides good recommendations. The most important tram stations for the Kick-Off Event are

  • Roter Turm (city centre)
  • Zentralhaltestelle (city centre)
  • TU Campus (Campus Reichenhainer Straße)
  • Omnibusbahnhof (Campus Straße der Nationen)

Purchasing a ticket

Tickets for public transport can be purchased directly in the tram or bus, mostly via card payment. However, to avoid cues on in the vehicles, we recommend pre-purchasing a ticket in the app “DB Navigator”. Once installed and once you arrived in Chemnitz, you will see on the starting page of the app “My Association”:

  1. Select “VMS” (the regional public transport association)
  2. Select “Go to ticket selection”
  3. Select “Einzelfahrt” (single ride)
  4. Fare Category: 1
  5. Departure: 13 Chemnitz
  6. Select “Next”
  7. Select “No need to login”
  8. Enter data
  9. Select payment method on next page
  10. Confirm order

Ticket prices

The price for a single ticket is 3 EUR for Chemnitz city. It is valid for one hour. For more than two tram or bus rides on a day, we recommend buying a day ticket. It costs 6 EUR for Chemnitz city and is valid until 4 am the next day.

Free Time Recommendations

Since last year, Chemnitz is the place for the unauthorized exhibition “Banksy – A Vandal Turned Idol”. This exhibition can be visited in the Markthalle Chemnitz (An der Markthalle 1, 09111 Chemnitz). It will take visitors to the world of the British street art idol. From Tuesday – Thursday the exhibition is open from 11 am to 6 pm. Adults pay 20 EUR.

You can also visit the Hartmannfabrik – the Visitor and Information Centre for Chemnitz2025. You will not only be able to learn more about Chemnitz2025, but also to visit a historical site. The old Hartmannfabrik is the last remaining production site of the “locomotive king” of Chemnitz – Richard Hartmann. The Hartmannfabrik opens from 10 am to 6 pm.

If you are around the Hartmannfabrik you can also find some photo spots, e.g. the large lettering for Chemnitz being ECoC2025 or interesting works of art called “Collateral Sculptures”.

The Collateral Sculptures is a project of Udo Pfeifer who also is the owner of Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz. The Kunstsammlungen at the “Theaterplatz” are among the largest civic art collections in Germany and cover all genres of artistic production with a special focus on textiles. On Tuesday and Thursday it is open from 11 am to 6 pm, on Wednesday from 2 pm to 9 pm. Adults pay 10 EUR.

If you would like to stroll around the city centre, you may find the castle district of Chemnitz, with the Schloßberg Museum on the hill as the former founding site of the city. From the terrace of the restaurant, you can enjoy a nice view over the castle pond and towards the city centre.

Close to the tram and bus station “Zentralhaltestelle” you can also find a petrified forest. It was formed 290 million years ago by silicification during a volcanic eruption. Most of the logs are displayed in the Museum of Natural History in Tietz.
